The development in progress of
the very reason why I am an artist.

This work explores in a in-progress manner the very reason why I have become an artist.

The installation consists of:

  • 11 A3 drawings
  • one projector with built-in DVD-player
  • tripod
  • masking tape
  • video portraying my father, the artist ==> See:Franzueli Rechsteiner

Background

At first look the viewer might be confused as there seems no relationship between the drawings, the video and the masking tape. However, for me, the artist who is exploring the reason for his existence as an artist, it makes sense as the drawings have been executed in a state of immense meditation ( a deep intellectual journey into oneself that produces metaphorical symbols and scenes reflecting aspects of my psychological memory). The video portrays my dad who is an artist himself. I made this movie in July 2012 when I entered a critical time in my own development as an artist, questioning my work and position within the arts. The making of the video built a bridge between the person I was and the person I was going to be which is the person I have now become. I use masking tape in order to measure and dissect space as a visual aid. I have integrated the masking tape left-overs in order to emphasize the in-progress nature of this specific art work. Note that the work is complete and not really in-progress. The way the work is installed is of great importance to me as it reflects the way I work.

Instructions:

  • The lowest drawing should hung be 30cm from the ground
  • The two stripes of tape go 30 cm into the room, starting each from the centre of the bottom rigth and the right on above (see photo)
  • The projector is to be placed in the position so that the projected image is A3 square
  • There should be no gap between the drawings and they should be placed in the correct order (see photos)
