Jay Rechsteiner is a painter based in Margate, UK. His recent work focuses on presence, spatial tension and what remains after events rather than the events themselves.
Moving away from text and explicit narrative, he develops paintings in which meaning is carried through structure, atmosphere, proximity and imbalance. Figures and spaces are often only partially resolved, allowing the work to remain open without becoming empty.
Alongside painting, he has also worked with drawing, performance, film and sound, but painting remains the core of his practice.
Selected presentations include Tate Liverpool, Venice Biennale contexts and projects across the UK, Japan and Europe.
